WAYNE, Neb. – Winona State University drops a doubleheader against Wayne State College.
The Warriors fought hard in both games against the Wildcats but came up short in both to start the weekend.
Game 1 | WSU 0, WSC 8
Max Heard got Wayne State on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with a single to center field. Adding three runs to the lead in the bottom of the second, the Wildcats scored with a single from Braden Cannon, a ground-out RBI from Cam Madsen, and Kaden Young crossing home plate on a wild pitch. WSC added one run in the bottom of the fifth off a double from Heard, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth with singles from Chase Douglas and Taylor Gill, and a ground-out RBI from Heard. The Wildcats were able to hold the Warriors scoreless through seven innings, granting them the victory.
Game 2 | WSU 4, WSC 8
Casey Prychak got the Wildcats on the board first in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run. Adding three runs to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, Wayne State scored when Cannon crossed home plate on a throwing error, a single from Douglas, and a sacrifice fly to center field from Heard.
Ryland Wall got the Warriors on the board in the top of the sixth with a double. Increasing the lead to six, Wayne State scored with a two-run home run from Young and with a single from Douglas. Scoring one more run in the bottom of the seventh, WSC scored when Brayden Chaney crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Winona State scored one run in the top of the eighth with a ground-out RBI from
Dylan Harer. The Warriors clawed away at the lead in the top of the ninth, crossing the plate two times when
Connor Weed scored on a wild pitch and
Cole Fuecker hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Unable to gather any more runs in the top of the ninth, Wayne State walked away with the victory.
Individual Leaders:
- In game one, R. Wall and Joshua Hawksford led WSU in hits, each with one. Hawksford, Jack Funke, Fuecker, and Alex Berreth were each walked once. Pierce Gritzmaker led Winona State on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings and striking out one batter.
- In game two, Berreth and R Wall led WSU in hits, each with three. R Wall, Fuecker, and Harer led the team in RBIs, each with one. Easton Arendt led Winona State on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings.
