WINONA, Minn. – Winona State volleyball begins conference play with a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten #15 Northern State.
Winona State captured the first set 25-14 before dropping the second set, but WSU fed off the home crowd to take sets three and four convincingly.
How it Happened:
The Warriors got off to a hot start, opening with a 7-2 lead while having a hitting percentage of 0.393 during the first set and held the Wolves to a 0.200 hitting percentage to take a dominating first-set win, 25-14.
WSU played a competitive second set, keeping a tied match at 18-18 but ultimately fell short in after a late run by the Wolves, who won 25-20 while hitting 0.237. The Warriors had a match low hitting percentage in the second set at 0.205.
Winona State dominated the rest of the match winning the third set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-17. WSU created havoc for the NSU's offense, holding them to less than 0.100 hitting percentage in both sets.
Statistical Comparison:
- Kenna Kornely led the charge tallying 18 kills with Gianna Vollrath (12) and Abby Ongna (8) also applying the pressure offensively.
- Ashlyn Steding and Jaci Winchell had 19 and 16 assists, respectively.
- Anna Hennessy picked 11 digs and Vollrath collected 7 blocks to lead the WSU defense.
- The Warriors led the floor in every team category, locking in 52 kills, 9 aces, 9 blocks, 44 assists, and 54 digs.
