ABERDEEN, S.D.- The Warriors women's basketball team was defeated 69-47 at Northern State.
Winona State fell behind early, trailing 17-12 after the first quarter. WSU saw themselves in a 40-25 hole going into halftime. The second half saw the Wolves cruise to a 69-47 victory over the Warriors.
How it Happened:
WSU ended a 6-0 start by the Wolves after
Megan Schuman buried a jumper, making it 6-2 NSU at the 7:08 mark in the first quarter. A jumper by
Hailey Markworth followed by a Schuman three-ball cut the WSU deficit to 11-9 with 3:40 remaining in the quarter. Markworth gave the Warriors their first advantage in the game at 12-11 with a three-pointer at 1:31. The Wolves ended the quarter with a 6-0 run capped off by a Reagan Rus layup giving NSU a 17-12 lead after one quarter.
Vivica Bretton connected on a three-ball cutting the NSU edge to 19-16 with 8:55 left in the half. Schuman and Bretton scored on back-to-back possessions to keep the deficit below double-digits at 31-23 NSU at the 3:50 mark. The Wolves ended the half on a 9-2 run ballooning their lead to 40-25 at the break.
Bretton scored the Warriors first four points of the half, cutting the deficit to 40-29 at the 7:54 mark in the third quarter. Morgan Fiedler exploded the Wolves' advantage to 52-31 after a three-pointer at 3:31 in the quarter.
Sadie Jarmolowicz connected on a pair of free throws, putting WSU behind at 52-33 at 3:17. NSUs Izzy Moore made a layup to end the third frame 60-37 Wolves.
Winona State's
Rylie Cother scored four points in a row to put the contest at 65-43 at 4:33. Telia Graham buried a jumper at 2:00 to make it 69-43 NSU. Two free throws by
Bria Stenstrom and a Cother jump-shot ended the game at 69-47 Wolves.
