Bemidji, Minn. – WSU women's basketball drops contest to BSU Beavers on the road 72-65.
The Winona State women's basketball team fell short to the Bemidji State University Beavers on the road after struggling the behind the arc.
How it Happened:
In the first half, there was a lot of back and forth between the Warriors and the Beavers. BSU was able to hold the lead the entire first quarter but Winona State was able to keep their deficit minimal after tough finishes from
Hailey Markworth,
Vivica Bretton and
Megan Schuman making the score 12-13 going into the second quarter. With successful free throws from BSU and
Megan Johnson coming off the bench and immediately contributing the Warriors would find themselves with a 17-15-point lead at the 8:10 mark. But the Beavers would hold strong going into halftime after some clutch free throws of their own and a score of 30-26.
In the second half, Winona State would try and claw their way back but Bemidji State would stay persistent, maintaining a lead (although small) for the entirety of the third quarter. Even with Markworth and Bretton supply the pressure on offense; the Warriors would find themselves in a 56-52 point deficit going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors would finally take the lead after a Markworth layup at the 8:11 minute mark to make the score 57-56. However, it would come down to clutch free throws and offensive possessions in which the Beavers would find themselves on top of winning the game 72-65.
Statistical Comparison:
- The Warriors shot 24-of-54 (44.4%) from the field while the Beavers went 22-of-59 (37.3%)
- Winona State shot four-of-12 (18.2%) from deep with Bemidji State going 13-of-34 (38.2%) from three-point land.
