WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team fell short in their match up against the UMary Marauders 66-58 at home.
The Winona State women's basketball team dropped their third game in a row game in a row against the UMary Marauders pushing them to 9-6 in conference play.
How it Happened:
To start the contest, UMary scored the first bucket of the game on a layup by Allison Undlin at the 9:16 minute mark. With seven lead changes in the first quarter alone, there would be a lot of physical finishes. At the 4:13 minute mark,
Vivica Bretton hit an electric three point shot to give the Warriors a 12-10 lead. But heading into the next quarter of play, both teams would battle and the score would be tied, 16-16.
In the second quarter, WSU would hit on a pair of free throws to start, from
Sadie Jarmolowicz, to give them a 20-17 lead at the 9:00 mark. Winona State would find themselves in dire need of a bucket after the Marauders would go on a 11-0 run un a successful layup from Bretton to make the score 28-22 in favor of UMary with 4:01 remaining on the clock. The next scores would not come until the 1:13 mark and the 0:32 mark making the score going into halftime, 31-24, UMary.
Coming out of the locker room, Winona State would stay true to their identity and battle through the free throw line. After two successful shots from
Hailey Markworth, the deficit for the Warriors shrunk to five with 8:57 remaining in the quarter. UMary would be successful from three-point land in a future possession but it would be immediately followed up by back-to-back three pointers from Jarmolowicz and
Natalie Meaux to narrow the score to 36-32. With both teams going back and forth, heading into the final quarter of play, Winona State would be down 43-38.
To finish the game, Markworth would hit a three-point shot 20 seconds into the quarter. Markworth would also score the Warriors first six points of the final quarter making the Marauders' lead the smallest it had been since the first half, 46-44 at the 6:56 mark. With every piece of momentum WSU could find, it seemed UMary had an answer, never giving Winona State the lead back in the fourth. UMary would close the game out on free throws and win the contest 66-58.
