WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team defeated the Minot State Beavers at home 74-64.
The Winona State women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak against the Minot State Beavers pushing them to 10-6 in conference play.
How it Happened:
In the first quarter, Minot State would strike first but would immediately be followed by a
Sadie Jarmolowicz three-point shot to make the score 3-2 at the 7:39 minute mark.
Hailey Markworth would also add to the Warriors offense, scoring 11 total points in the first, including a three-point jumper to end the quarter giving WSU a 20-18-point lead.
In the second quarter,
Vivica Bretton would start up the Warriors' offense with a tough finish in the paint, making the score 22-19 with 9:35 remaining. The middle of the quarter was back and forth with four lead changes within five minutes. But WSU would go on an 11-0 run to end the first half with everyone pitching in, in their own ways. The score going into the second half would be 40-31 in favor of the Winona State Warriors.
To start the second half, Winona State's
Megan Schuman would hit on her two free throws and there was no looking back for the Warriors. With Markworth and
Bria Stenstrom both hitting threes on back-to-back possessions, it seemed Winona State might be pulling away, with the score being 51-38 at the 5:21 mark. However, the Beavers showed grit to finish the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 12-2 and the score leading into the fourth quarter was 53-49, Warriors.
To finish the game, Winona State was able to control the post and set the tone for the rest of the fourth quarter. With all of their elite ball players hitting clutch shots, including, Jarmolowicz with a three-point shot to extend the lead to seven with 8:05 remaining, Schuman with another tough finish in the paint to make the score 60-51 with 7:27 on the clock, and Markworth putting the nail in the coffin at the 5:47 minute mark giving the Warriors a 11 point lead. As they have all season, WSU was able to finish the game at the free throw line and snap a three-game losing streak, winning against MISU 74-64.
