WINONA, Minn. – The Warriors women's basketball team fed off a hot start against Wayne State to lead them to victory.
The Winona State women's basketball team defeated the Wayne State College Wildcats at home 79-57, after being up 21-4 in the first five minutes of play.
How it Happened:
In the first quarter, the Warriors could not be stopped, going on a 8-0 run to start the game. Winona State's success from behind the arc was like nothing we had seen all season, with
Natalie Meaux leading the charge followed by
Megan Schuman with a three pointer the next possession.
Sadie Jarmolowicz would hit two of her own and
Hailey Markworth joined the fun at the 3:53 minute mark to make the score 21-4.
Vivica Bretton would end the quarter with an electric mid-range floater.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats would score the first bucket with a Kelsey Willems three-point shot. After a short 9-0 run by WSC the score would be 31-19 in favor of the Warriors. WSU would come back with a successful run of their own, scoring 11 points straight and giving them a 42-19-point lead with 3:04 minutes before half. After some solid free throws from Winona State the score going into half would be 53-27.
Coming out of halftime, the Warriors would take one of their biggest leads of the night after another Markworth three-pointer, 61-31 with 6:01 remaining. With some back-and-forth possessions with Warriors would maintain their lead for the remainder of the quarter.
Megan Schuman and
Bria Stenstrom were more Warriors who found themselves in the scorer's column. The score going into the final quarter of play would be 67-45, WSU.
In the final quarter of play, Wayne State would cut the lead to 17 with 6:41 remaining in the game but could never gather a run long enough to realistically get them back in the game. Winona State maintained their lead until the final whistle blow, winning the game 79-57 setting them for a chance at top four in the NSIC.
Statistical Comparison:
- The Warriors shot an electric 30-of-55 (54.5%) from the field while the Wildcats went 23-of-60 (38.3%) in the win.
- WSU commanded the glass out rebounding Wayne State 42-22.
- Winona State shot a quality 9-of-22 (40.9%) from three-point land with the Wildcats shooting 6-of-27 (22.2%) as well.
- From the free throw line, WSU went 10-of-14 (71.4%) while WSC shot 5-7 (71.4%) from the charity stripe.
- Hailey Markworth and Megan Schuman led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points apiece shooting, 8-of-10 and 9-of-14, respectively.
- Vivica Bretton paired her 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three with 10 rebounds.
- Schuman added 10 rebounds with 21 points to give her a double-double on the night.
- Kelsey Willems led the Wildcats with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting, while going 3-of-6 from deep.
Winona State (14-9, 11-6 NSIC) will be in action next on Saturday, February 7th against Augustana at 1:00pm in McCown Gymnasium.
