Box Score 2 WINONA, Minn. – The WSU baseball team dropped game one 2-0, but battled back to win 5-4 in 10 innings after
Connor Greuel's walk-off hit in the nightcap.
Winona State's
Nathan Vela's strong start in game one wasn't enough as the Warriors offense was unable to muster a hit, losing 2-0. In game two, Augustana jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but a three-run home run from
Dylan Harer brought WSU right back in it. The game was tied up in the seventh and remained scoreless till the bottom of the tenth, when Greuel scored
Payton Kohnle on an RBI double, to cap off the exciting 5-4 extra-innings victory.
Game One: AUGIE (2) – WSU (0)
The WSU offense struggled at the plate all game. Augustana took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after an RBI single from Ryan Clementi. The Vikings tacked on another run in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly from Joshua Koskie.
Josh Hatano drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. The momentum ended when he was later picked off at first base.
Winona State did not reach base for the rest of the game as Augustana's Mariano Gomez tossed a 10-strikeout no-hitter to give AUGIE a 2-0 win.
Vela (1-3) suffered the loss in the pitcher's duel. He went 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and three hits. He recorded three strikeouts and walked four batters.
Boyd Skelley pitched the final frame, striking out all three batters he faced.
Game Two: WSU (5) – AUGIE (4)
The Vikings crossed home first with a run in the third. AUGIE extended its advantage to 4-0 after a three-run homer in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, WSU got on the board in a big way with a three-run blast from Harer, scoring
Easton Arendt and
Garrett Hietpas to cut the WSU deficit to 4-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, WSU loaded the bases with two outs. Kohnle then drew an RBI walk, tying the game 4-4.
Winona State shut the door in the top of the ninth, after a leadoff single.
Cayden Mueller struck out Augustana's Brandon Weigel in the tenth, stranding two AUGIE baserunners.
In the bottom of the tenth, Kohnle reached on a leadoff single followed by a pinch-hit walk by
Christian Varsho put two Warriors on with no outs. With a full count, Greuel smoked a double over the left fielder's head to give WSU a 5-4 comeback win in 10 innings.
Harer led the WSU bats with three hits and three RBI. Kohnle went 2-for-2 with a walk and the game winning run. Greuel was 1-for-2 with the game winning RBI double.
Carson Jones earned the start, going 2.2 innings allowing one earned run.
Max Strecker went 1.2 innings, giving up two earned runs while
Wesley Johnson tossed 1.0 innings allowing one earned run on three hits. Skelley pitched a scoreless 0.2 innings while
Logan LaPlante kept the Warriors in it, throwing 2.1 scoreless frames. Mueller (1-0) closed the door, as he picked up the win, finishing the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and zero runs.
Winona State (14-17, 9-9 NSIC) is right back in action with a three-game series at St. Cloud State, starting on Friday, April 10, after it was moved up. First pitch for the doubleheader on Friday is at 12:00pm with the third game set for 11:00am on Saturday, April 11.
