This Week's Women's Basketball Storylines:BREAKING THE STREAKS: Winona State will be looking to break a few losing streaks against the University of Mary on Friday night and Minot State on Saturday. The Warriors have lost five straight against Mary and have lost the previous two meetings against Minot State. WSU will take on Mary Friday night in McCown Gymnasium at 6 p.m. and will play Minot State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
STAYING NEAR THE TOP: With the two wins this past weekend against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State, the Warriors currently sit a half game back of first place in the NSIC South standings. WSU is currently in a three-way tie with Wayne State and Sioux Falls for second in the conference with Minnesota State currently holding the top spot.
BLOCKING AND BOARD REVISITED: Sophomore center Kayla Timmerman had another monster weekend on the glass and blocking shots for WSU. Timmerman recorded a career-high 12 rebounds against Sioux Falls while also recording a second-best five blocks. Timmerman recorded another three blocks against Southwest Minnesota State, currently putting her in a tie for second in the NSIC with 28 blocks. Freshman Hannah McGlone also had a strong showing on the glass against Southwest Minnesota State by tying a career-high nine rebounds.
SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS: The Warriors will be looking to stop the NSIC's third-leading scorer Brittney Dietz, who currently leads the Marauders at 17.7 ppg. However, WSU will also need to take care of the basketball when she is defending, as she also fifth in the conference in steals at 2.1 steals per game. Dietz had a strong performance the last time the two teams met, scoring 16 points in a 71-66 win for Mary in the first round of the 2014 NSIC Tournament.
ARC BATTLE: The game could be decided from the three-point arc, as the best three-point shooting team in the NSIC will be challenged by the NSIC's second-best three-point shooting defense. The Warriors possess the best three-point shooting team in the NSIC and the fourth best in the nation at 39.9 percent, while Mary posts the second-best three-point field goal defense at 28.2 percent.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: The Beavers post a balanced scoring lineup, with four players averaging double-figures, led by Christina Boag at 11.9 ppg. However, despite the balanced scoring, the Beavers are 14th in the NSIC in scoring as a team at 65.1 ppg. However, the Warriors will be challenged on the defensive end as the Beavers post the fifth-best scoring defense in the conference at 62.8 ppg.
