This Week's Women's Basketball Storylines:
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: After losing four consecutive conference road games, the Warriors will look to bounce back against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston at home, where they are 10-0 on the year. Winona State will take on the Beavers on Friday night at 6 p.m. and the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium.
Â
ROCKY ROAD: Winona State has had a reversal of fortunes on the road this year compared to home. The Warriors are 7-0 at home in conference play this season, but are just 2-5 on the road. The Warriors haven't had much success on the road in recent years as the last time WSU had a winning conference road record was in the 2011-12 season where they went 6-5 on the road.
Â
POST POWER: Despite two tough road losses, Winona State got some promising play from two of their young post players. Sophomore center
Kayla Timmerman and freshman forward
Hannah McGlone both scored a career-high in points with 24 and 14 respectively. Timmerman's 24 points came on 10-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four blocked shots, and a career-high three assists. McGlone's 14 came off of a 6-for-10 performance from the field with six rebounds while also recording a career-high three steals.
Â
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: Bemidji State (5-14 overall, 2-12 NSIC) will be a dramatic change of pace from what the Warriors played this past weekend. After playing the league's first and second ranked offenses, the Beavers come into McCown 12th in the NSIC in scoring (66.0 ppg) and 11th in the league in field goal percentage (.400). The Warriors will look to contain freshman center Sierra Senske, who leads the Beavers at 14.8 ppg. Winona State will likely match her up against Timmerman, who is currently third in the NSIC in blocked shots at 2.1 bpg.
Â
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE BEAVERS: The Warriors are 31-42 against Bemidji State all-time but are 12-6 against the Beavers since head coach
Scott Ballard took over in the 2004-05 season. The Warriors have won 11 of the past 14 meetings and are currently on a three-game winning streak with the last loss coming back on December 9, 2011. In last season's meeting, the Warriors defeated the Beavers 62-31 in Bemidji.
Â
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES: Minnesota Crookston (8-10 overall, 7-7 NSIC) currently post the eight-best scoring offense in the NSIC (69.2 ppg) as well as the eighth best scoring defense in the league (68.5 ppg). While the Eagles are .500 in conference play, they are a tough team that have played tough on the road in NSIC play, getting road wins against Wayne State and St. Cloud State. The Warriors will look to try and contain Alexa Thielman, who is the NSIC's fifth-leading scorer at 16.6 ppg and Katrina Moenkedick, who averages 14.1 ppg.
Â
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE GOLDEN EAGLES: The Warriors are currently 15-14 all-time against the Golden Eagles and 9-8 under head coach
Scott Ballard. Winona State has won three of their last four games against Crookston. In last season's meeting, the Golden Eagles came away with a 71-58 win in Crookston.
STOPPING THE BIG RUNS: If Winona State wants to come away with a victory, the Warriors will look to keep both Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston from making big runs. In last Friday's match against the Vikings, the Warriors gave up a 16-1 run in the second half to allow Augustana back into the game and in Saturday's match against Wayne State, WSU gave up a 16-0 before halftime to end up facing a 19-point deficit going into halftime.
