WSU Tips Off NSIC Tournament Play At Home Against U-Mary

This Week's Women's Basketball Storylines:

TOURNEY TIME: Winona State (19-7 overall, 15-7 NSIC) heads into NSIC Tournament play as the third-seeded team in the NSIC South and will take on the sixth-seeded NSIC North team, the University of Mary (10-18 overall, 8-14 NSIC) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in McCown Gym.

SNAPPING THE STREAK: Winona State snapped No. 16 Wayne State's 14-game winning streak last Friday in a 69-56 win. The Wildcats, the NSIC South and overall champions hadn't lost a game since losing at home to Augustana on Dec. 20, 2014. The Warriors held the Wildcats to a tie of their season-low in points since their 56-48 home win against Northwest Missouri State.

ROELOFS RECOVERY: After only making 5-of-35 from three-point range in the prior 12 games, sophomore guard Tara Roelofs bounced back against Wayne State by draining 5-of-6 from behind the arc. It was her second game this season where she made five three-point field goals, with the other coming in a 5-of-8 shooting performance from behind the arc against MSU Moorhead.

CLIMBING THE RANKS: With the win over Wayne State, the Warriors continue to set new marks in the program's history under Coach Ballard. The 19 wins this season set the fifth-best mark in Winona State program history. The all-time record for most wins in a single season was 24 set back in in the 2008-09 season and the second-best mark is 21 wins, set three times in the 2007-08 season, the 2010-11 season, and the 2012-13 season. Winona State's current win percentage of .731 is the third-best mark in the history of the program.

INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: Junior point guard Connor Nagle and sophomore guard Tara Roelofs are both quickly making their climbs in the WSU career record books. Nagle is currently 10th in program history with 99 career three-point field goals and Roelofs is in a tie for 17th in career three-point field goals with 72. Timmerman got her 50th blocked shot of the season against Augustana, which currently puts her alone in fifth in a single-season in blocked shots and is two blocks shy from tying Bernie Roskop's fourth spot in the record book with 52 blocks set back in the 1982-83 season.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS: Winona State will experience some déjà vu in the first round of the NSIC Tournament Wednesday night. The Warriors will face off against the University of Mary for the second time this season at home. Much like the first matchup, the Warriors will need to contain the NSIC's fifth leading scorer in Brittney Dietz (16.8 ppg). Dietz is a force on the offense and defensive ends as she leads the team in assists (87) and steals (51). WSU will also need to contain Sloan Turner, who is the team's third leading scorer at 10.7 ppg and had a big game the last time she played the Warriors scoring 17 points. Hannah Larson is another forward Winona State will need to contain as she is second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS THE MARAUDERS: The Warriors currently hold an 8-7 mark all-time against the Marauders. The last time the two teams met was on Jan. 16, 2015 in McCown Gym where the Warriors pulled out a 70-65 victory, coming from behind in the second half to get the win. Winona State got big games out of Alexis Foley, who led the Warriors with 19 points and Timmerman added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, as well as adding three blocked shots and three steals in the victory. This is the second year in a row Winona State and Mary are playing each other in the first round of the NSIC Tournament, as the Warriors will be looking at getting revenge for a 72-66 loss at Mary in last year's first round NSIC Tournament game.
