Warriors prepare for second NSIC semifinal in as many years

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.Winona State (16-12) upset the north's top seed Northern State (25-5) in the NSIC quarterfinals Sunday, 57-44, to advance into the postseason semifinals for the second straight year.

Concordia-St. Paul earned a spot in tonight's matchup by defeating Wayne State in a battle down the stretch, 80-70.

The Warriors and Golden Bears split their regular season meetings this year with Winona State winning the first game back in December, 62-43, and Concordia-St. Paul taking claiming the most recent matchup, 59-49.

NOTES

QUARTERFINAL RECAP: The Warriors knocked off Northern State Sunday afternoon in a game where Allie Pickrain lived up to her NSIC Freshman of the Year accolade. The guard scored 15 of her 24 points in the first half to propel the Warriors to a 33-22 halftime lead. After trailing 17-13 in the first quarter, Winona State outscored the Wolves 44-27 the remainder of the game. The Warriors held the NSIC's most consistent shooting team to just 34 percent shooting on the day. The win for Winona State avenged their semifinal OT loss to the Wolves last season.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS: Concordia-St. Paul comes into the semifinal matchup winning each of its last six games. To get to this point in the tournament, the Golden Bears defeated St. Cloud on the road in the first round 82-63 and beat Wayne State last night to secure a date with the Warriors. CSP has been shooting over 50 percent from the field in this year's tournament while averaging 53 percent from beyond the arc. As a team, the Golden Bears have forced double digit turnovers in each of their previous tournament games. Lindsay Dorr and Anna Schmitt, who have combined to shoot 45 percent from the field this season, each dropped 25 points for Concordia-St. Paul in the win against Wayne State.

DOWNTOWN: The Warriors have really taken advantage of shooting from beyond the arc this season. Ranked fourth in the conference (36%), the Warriors have shot above the average mark in 11 of the 16 wins this year. Winona State freshman Allie Pickrain leads the team with 68 three pointers this season and just cracked the top-10 on the single season chart.

ALL-CONFERENCE ACCOLADES: The NSIC announced their All-Conference teams this past Thursday and two Warriors made the list. Senior Hannah McGlone was named to the First Team All-NSIC list for the first time in her historic career. McGlone led the NSIC in rebounding (10.2), ranked eighth in scoring (14.1) and owned the second-best shooting percentage in the league (53.5%) during the regular season. Collecting 13 double-doubles this season, McGlone ranks 18th among Division II players this season. Freshman Allie Pickrain caught the eyes of many and was named the NSIC Freshman of the Year as well as making the Second Team All-NSIC list. Pickrain is averaging 13 points per game this year and has led the league in three-point shooting. Her 43 percent shooting from beyond the arc ranks 18th among Division II players this season.

CEMENTING HER LEGACY: As Hannah McGlone collected her fourth rebound in Sunday's game against Northern State, the senior became Winona States all-time leader in rebounds, eclipsing the record previously held by Lisa Parsons (928). McGlone also became a member of the 1,000 point club and now sits 17th on the all-time scoring list (1,053). McGlone and Parsons are the only two women in Winona State history to score over 1,000 points and collect 900 rebounds in their career. This past Wednesday marked her 120th career game which placed McGlone at the top of the list for most games played in by an individual in program history.
