La CROSSE, Wis. - The Winona State University women's basketball team cruised to an 84-46 win over Dakota State University in their first exhibition contest of the 2021-22 season.
Emma Fee and
Caitlin Riley combined to dominate the scoreboard and stat sheet on behalf of the Warriors, with both players scoring 19 points each against the Trojans. Fee also hauled in three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists from her post position.
Taylor Hustad led Winona State in assists with four while scoring eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting effort. Riley and Fee were also dialed in, with Fee hitting 9-for-10 from the floor and Riley going 7-for-9, including 5-for-7 from three point territory.
WSU saw 14 different players take the floor in the victory, with
Shea Dechant chipping in seven points off the bench, while
Vanessa Alexander grabbed five rebounds, leading all players in that stat category.
As a team, Winona State out-rebounded DSU 32-21 and the Warriors were 6-of-7 overall from the foul line. For the game, Winona State shot 59.6% from the floor. WSU led at the half, 49-21 and received 32 points from players in the paint for the game.
Dakota State was paced by Courtney Menning who had 13 points, while Savannah Walsdorf had nine. The Warriors stifling defense held the Trojans to a 33.3% shooting percentage in the contest.
Winona State will face host Viterbo University tomorrow in their second, and final, exhibition contest of the preseason. The Warriors and V-Hawks will tip off at 3pm in Varsity Gymnasium.
