Warrior Game Day : Women's Basketball

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Winona State University women's basketball team will play their second road game in as many days when they face the University of Sioux Falls this evening at 5:30pm.  

Winona State (4-4, 1-3 NSIC) will take on USF (6-3, 3-1 NSIC) in the Stewart Center in a NSIC South matchup.  Head coach Scott Ballard and WSU are coming off a 69-64 loss at Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, while USF dispatched Upper Iowa, 73-50.

Warriors - Cougars Notables:

WSU is looking to break a three-game losing skid to USF; the Warriors last beat the Cougars on Feb. 14, 2020. Sioux Falls beat WSU twice last season and ended the Warrior's 2019-20 playoff run at the Pentagon.

Emma Fee scored 30 points vs. USF last year in a 73-67 loss on the road in Sioux Falls. In the game, Fee was 11-of-17 overall and perfect from both the free-throw line (6-6) & 3-point territory.

USF features freshman Megan Fannin who is scoring over 17 points a game, while WSU has two seniors averaging double-digits, Taylor Hustad (12.0) & Emma Fee (10.6).

n the NSIC South, the Warriors head into the weekend as the only 1-2 team in the Division but have four teams above them within easy reach at 2-1 overall. Two of those four teams are USF and SMSU.

Also in the NSIC South, Winona State is one of six teams at .500 or better overall on the year so far. Only UIU is below the .500 mark at 1-6.

As a team, Winona State is holding opponents to an average of 62.0 points per game, the fifth-best in the NSIC. WSU is also one of the top free-throw shooting squads in the league, hitting 78.7% of their free throws, the third-best mark in the conference.

At home, Winona State has the second-best attendance mark in the NSIC, drawing an average of 991 fans per game.

Taylor Hustad is currently fourth in the league in field goal percentage, hitting at a 52.8% clip. Hustad is also tied for 9th in rebounds per game in the NSIC at 6.9 per outing.

Caitlin Riley's four made 3-pointers vs. McKendree on Nov. 19 is tied for the third-best output in the NSIC this season. Overall Riley leads WSU in 3-pointer attempts (36) and makes (13).

Emily Kieck is currently 10th in the NSIC in the assist/turnover ratio category; she has 21 assists compared to 20 turnovers, good for a 1.1 mark. She is also 10th in the league in total assists.

Emma Fee's 24 point game vs. NW Missouri is tied for 7th among top single-game outputs this year; Hustad's 23 vs. Upper Iowa is tied for 8th best.

After starting the season 0-2, Sioux Falls has won five of their last six contests to reach a 5-3 record on the season, including 2-1 in the NSIC.

All three of USF's losses have been within single digits, including a 73-82 defeat to No. 4 Fort Hays State.

Megan Fannin leads the Cougars with 17.1 points/game. Krystal Carlson is the only other average double figures at 10.9 points/game.

Dallie Hoskinson leads USF in minutes (32.8/game), three point percentage (42.1%), rebounds (5.4/game), and steals (3.0/game).

Sioux Falls is third in the NSIC in scoring offense, averaging 73.4 points per game, and allow an average of 64.6 points/game.

They also are third in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 44.2% from the field, including 30.8% from beyond the arc.

The Cougars only conference loss was to traveling partner, Southwest Minnesota State, where the Mustangs defeated the Cougars 75-67.

Sioux Falls will host Upper Iowa on Friday, Dec. 10 before hosting the Warriors on Saturday, Dec. 11.
