Warrior Game Day: Volleyball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's volleyball team, ranked #10 in the current American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, is set to host a pair of matches celebrating Family Weekend in the first home action in nearly two years.

The #10 Warriors will start Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action with a pair of tough opening matches and an exciting home giveaway for fans on Friday night.

The first 250 students in the door for the Friday feature showdown between Winona State (8-0, 0-0 NSIC) and (RV) Northern State (5-3, 0-0 NSIC) will receive a McDonald's coupon as a part of the matchday experience. Match time is set for 6pm in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.

WSU is playing outstanding volleyball after two tournaments so far this season; at 8-0, the Warriors are off to one of the best starts in head coach Joe Getzin's tenure with the program.  NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Megan Flom is showing the NSIC - and the country - why the coaches from around the league picked her as the standout offensive threat heading into the season. Flom has a .429 hitting percentage and 106 kills, earned over 27 sets played.  In NSIC play to date, Flom is second in the league in hitting percentage and is tops in total kills.

Much of Flom's success comes from the hard work of setter Bre Maloney, who has set up Flom and her teammates in outstanding fashion so far this season. Maloney has 278 assists on the year, good for a 11.12 assist/set mark. Maloney impacts her team defensively as well, recording 76 digs.  Speaking of defense, Becca Pagel has 143 digs on the year as well, racking up 5.30 per set, and has a .953 receive percentage. Madison Rizner been perfect that same category for WSU at 1.000 in 24 sets played and has 17 blocks on the year, second on the squad.

Northern State started the year in the AVCA top 25, rising as high as # 19. The Wolves are currently in the Receiving Votes category of the poll.  As a team, NSU is hitting .236 in 2021 averaging 13.6 kills, 12.6 assists and 14.6 digs per outing. Sally Gaul and Natalia Szybinska lead the squad with 110 and 99 kills on the year. Szybinska has a team-best .286 hitting mark.

The Dragons have started the season 0-8, going winless at Northern State Classic most recently. Freshman Halle Erickson runs the MSUM attack, handing out 104 assist this season so far. Outside hitter Amanda Carlson is the top Dragon in terms of kills with 107, while teammate Teeya Doppler has 46.  MSU-Moorhead are coached by Bob Jones, who is in his first season in Moorhead.
