NSIC Weekend: Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team is set to compete in their final home NSIC weekend before the holiday break, as WSU will host Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Dec. 9 and the University of Sioux Falls on Saturday, Dec. 10.  The Warriors will tip off at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the Mustangs and will tangle with the Cougars at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. 

Winona State is 7-2 on the year but will be looking to break a two-game skid, having fallen to Minnesota State (88-69) and Concordia University, St. Paul (58-39) in their most recent two contests. SMSU enters their NSIC weekend at 5-3 overall and coming off a loss to Wayne State College last Saturday, 72-62.  USF is 3-6 on the season and winless in NSIC play.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Winona State is 7-2 this season and 1-2 in the NSIC
  • WSU is in the 'Receiving Votes' section in the D2SIDA Central Region women's basketball poll this week.
  • The Warriors currently hold a 6.8 scoring margin as they score 65.0 points/game and allow just 58.2 points/game to opponents.
  • Alex Dornfeld leads the Warriors with 14.2 points/game and 10.5 rebounds/game to be averaging a double-double. Dornfeld's 10.5 rebounds per game currently leads the NSIC.
  • Lauren Fech leads WSU in minutes (33.0/game) and adds 2.2 assists/game.
  • Caitlin Riley leads WSU with nine three pointers made this season and is averaging 4.5 three-point attempts per game.
  • Dornfeld has notched four double-doubles this season, a mark that is tied for 14th in the nation.
  • WSU hosts SMSU and USF this weekend before heading to Wayne State and Augustana next weekend to close out the 2022 calendar year.

Southwest Minnesota State STORYLINES
  • The Mustangs enter the weekend with a 5-3 record overall, including a 2-1 mark in the NSIC.
  • SMSU averages 79.4 points per game and holds a 13.5 scoring margin over their opponents, who score 65.9 points/game.
  • Hannah Parsley leads SMSU with 14.3 ppg. Bri Stoltzman (14.0 ppg), Jenna Borchers (13.6 ppg), and Sam Wall (11.5 ppg) also average double-figure scoring.
  • Bri Stoltzman averages 28.4 minutes, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists each game to lead the Mustangs.
  • SMSU is 0-2 on the road this season, having losses at Nebraska-Kearney (67-57) and at Wayne State (62-2)
  • Tom Webb is currently in his seventh season as the head women's basketball coach at SMSU.
University of Sioux Falls STORYLINES
  • The Cougars have opened the season with a 3-6 record and are 0-3 in the conference.
  • Sioux Falls averages 62.4 points/game and they allow 65.6 points/game to their opponents.
  • Eight different players average at least 5.0 points/game for Sioux Falls. Olivia Gamoke leads the team with 9.3 points/game.
  • Dallie Hoskinson and Krystal Carlson lead the Cougars on the glass as they each grab 4.3 rebounds/game.
  • Sidney Swanson and Olivia Gamoke dish out 2.4 assists per game as USF's main facilitators.
  • Travis Traphagen is in his 15th season as the head coach for Sioux Falls.

WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • The Warriors were selected 11th overall and 5th in the NSIC South by coaches around the league.
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coach Hannah McGlone are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes.
  • The Warriors' 7-0 start was the best opening stretch of games since the 2015-16 season, where WSU started 13-0.
