WINONA, Minn. - USA Today
published a story highlighting the family of Winona State University soccer student-athlete
Ella Roberts, whose eight-year-old brothers Cooper and Luke, as well as mother Keely, were all injured in the shooting that occurred in Highland Park, Illinois on July 4.
In the USA Today feature written by Christine Fernando, Roberts family spokesperson Tony Loizzi provided updates to the condition and diagnoses of Cooper, Luke and Keely. Fernando's story reports that Cooper has been paralyzed as a result of his wounds, while Keely has undergone two surgeries on gunshot wounds she suffered in her foot and leg. Luke was struck by shrapnel, some of which remains in his body. Luke has been discharged from the hospital, while Keely and Cooper are still under care. The article reports that Cooper has "had several surgeries but on Thursday remained unconscious, on a ventilator and in critical but stable condition." The full article is available

Further information on the
GoFundMe website established by several family friends including WSU alumnae and former women's soccer student-athlete
Georgette Topalis, is available
at this link.
Topalis noted, "The Winona State women's soccer family, all players past and present, stand with Ella and her family. We all pray for the best possible outcomes for Cooper, Keely and Luke. We also encourage others to stand with us, and to consider donating to the family via the verified GoFundMe page that has been established."
Head soccer coach
Matt Kellogg added, "My heart breaks for Ella and her family. The Roberts family comes to many of our games and one can always count on seeing her little brothers running around, just being kids, and that has been taken away. We invite and ask the entire Winona State community to come together to help Ella and her family, and to consider donating to the verified GoFundMe page that our WSU soccer alumnae have helped establish."
Ella Roberts enrolled at Winona State and joined the women's soccer team as a freshman in 2018, arriving on campus after a stellar career at Antioch High School in Antioch, Illinois. Roberts, an Advertising major, and Topalis were teammates at Winona State, with both standouts sharing the bond of hometowns located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Topalis earned the NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic With Distinction Award in 2021 and Roberts will be in her final year of undergraduate work at WSU, scheduled for a spring, 2023 graduation.
This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
