NSIC Weekend : Women's Soccer

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University soccer team - ranked No. 10 in the most recent Central Region poll - returns to the road, competing in two key 2022 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contests. WSU will play at St. Cloud State on Friday, September, 16 and at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, September 18.

The Warriors and Huskies will kickoff at 6 p.m. on Friday, while Sunday's match against UMD will begin at 1 p.m.

Winona State heads into the NSIC weekend with a 3-1-1 record, earning a win and a draw last weekend in road matches at the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University. 

The Warriors will be looking to avenge a loss last year against SCSU, having fallen 2-1 against the Huskies at home. Against the Bulldogs, WSU will look to replicate the 2021 form that saw them shutout UMD 3-0 in one of the best overall team performances of last season.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Jaida Wiege has found the back of the net in back-to-back games for Winona State and has three goals on the year. 
  • Chloe Swanson has been in the goal for all three Warrior wins and the draw earned at USF.
  • Ashley Hewitt earned NSIC Offensive Player of the Week in week one for WSU.
  • The Warrior back line is anchored by Bailey Deininger who leads WSU in minutes played at 416.
  • WSU has three captains this season: Reanne WeilRiley Harmon and Deininger
  • The trip this weekend will conclude a seven-match away streak for the Warriors. 
  • WSU's NSIC home opener is against Minot State University on Friday, Sept. 23. 
  • Winona State held NCAA Division I Southern Indiana to one goal in a 1-0 exhibition loss during preseason camp.  USI currently is 3-2-2 on the year. 
  • Winona State head coach Matt Kellogg (62-125-18) heads into 2022 for his 13th season as a head coach. Kellogg was previously at Kalamazoo, Ferris State and North Dakota.
  • Winona State out-shot Sioux Falls last Friday 9-4. On Sunday, SMSU had the shots advantage (19-11) but WSU made theirs count, earning the 1-1 draw on the road. 
  • Wiege leads the team in goals (3), points (6) and shots (9).
  • Winona State has yet to earn a penalty kick on the season, while opponents are 0-1 on PK's against the Warriors. 
St. Cloud State STORYLINES
  • St. Cloud State is 1-4-0 overall and in 0-2-0 NSIC play, heading into the weekend.
  • SCSU is coming off a two-loss weekend, losing 2-0 to the University of Mary on Friday, Sept. 9 and falling 1-0 to Minot State Sunday, Sept. 11.
  • The Huskies have four players who have scored a goal this season; Megan Kirby, Gracie Parsons, Jenna Dominguez and Emali Ortega Talamantes. 
  • Evie Kohn has played five games in goal, starting four. 
  • SCSU coach Gretta Arvesen is in her ninth season in charge of the Huskies.
Minnesota Duluth STORYLINES
  • Minnesota Duluth heads into the weekend with s 2-2-1 overall record. 
  • LIke the Warriors, the Bulldogs are 1-0-0 in NSIC play.
  • UMD opened the season with a 2-1 win over Michigan Tech
  • The Bulldogs have not scored more than two goals in any game this season and were held scoreless in a 3-0 loss to NMU.
  • Jackie Jares leads the Bulldogs with five points, scoring twice and notching one assist. 
  • Abbie Gotham has played in four matches in goal for UMD, starting three. Jennifer Norris has two starts for the Bulldogs as a goalkeeper. 
  • Head coach Greg Cane has served at UMD since 1994, the year the program was first initiated. 
WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • After the weekend, Winona State will have played the longest stretch of consecutive away matches in since 2010.
  • Winona State has won their last four matches against the Bulldogs, a string that started in 2017.
  • Over their last four meetings, Winona State and SCSU have split the points. SCSU beat WSU in 2021 and 2019, WSU won in 2017 and 2016.
