NSIC Weekend: Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team is set for two road contests this weekend, as they will face St. Cloud State on Friday, Jan. 13 and then No. 15 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Jan. 14. The Warriors take on the Huskies at 5:30pm on Friday and tip off against the Bulldogs at 3:30pm on Saturday.

The Warriors hold a 9-7 record this season, and are 3-7 in the NSIC. WSU snapped a four-game losing streak after defeating Bemidji State, 76-63, on Jan. 7.

  • Friday's contest will take place in Halenbech Hall on the campus of St. Cloud State, while Saturday's game will be in Romano Gymnasium at Minnesota Duluth.
WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Winona State enters the weekend 9-7 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC. WSU snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Bemidji State on Jan. 7.
  • The Warriors average 64.4 points per game while allowing 61.6 points/game to opponents.
  • WSU holds the third best three-point shooting percentage in the league, knocking down 35.7% of shots from deep while averaging 8.1 makes per game.
  • Alex Dornfeld leads the Warriors with 12.8 ppg and 9.1 rebounds/game. Her 9.1 rpg leads the NSIC, and Dornfeld has a league-leading five double-doubles.
  • Caitlin Riley leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage with a .471 mark. Riley's 41 three pointers are the most out of any player in the NSIC.
  • Ava Sergio recorded her first double-double of the season against Bemidji State, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 boards in the win.
  • Lauren Fech scored 25 points on 10-17 shooting against Bemidji State to record the most points for WSU in a single game this season.
St. Cloud State STORYLINES
  • The Huskies are 10-4 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC heading into the weekend.
  • SCSU averages 65.6 points/game and allows just 58.0 points to opponents each game.
  • St. Cloud State has the second best defense in the NSIC, allowing just 58 points and holding opponents to 0.376 shooting.
  • Katrina Theis leads the Huskies with 15.2 points/game. Jada Eggebrecht adds on 14.2 ppg to be the only other Husky in double figures.
  • Tori Peschel pulls in 8.0 rebounds per game while adding on 2.9 assists, both are the top marks for SCSU.
  • Dru Henning leads St. Cloud State from beyond the arc, knocking down three pointers at a 0.417 clip.
  • Lori Fish is in her 15th season at the helm for St. Cloud State women's basketball.
Minnesota Duluth STORYLINES
  • The Bulldogs are 13-2 overall and are a perfect 10-0 in the NSIC to lead the NSIC North and the conference overall.
  • Minnesota Duluth is currenlty ranked No. 15 in the WBCA Coaches Poll.
  • UMD has the best scoring defense in the conference, holding opponents to just 55.7 points/game. The Bulldogs put up 66.3 ppg on offense to hold a 10.6 scoring margin.
  • Brooke Olson leads UMD in scoring with 18.5 points/game, which is also first in the NSIC. Olson also leads Minnesota Duluth with 7.1 rebounds/game.
  • Maesyn Thiesen dishes out a team-high 3.6 assists per game in an average of 31.7 minutes of action.
  • Ella Gilbertson shoots from deep at a rate of 0.429 to be the most effective Bulldog from long distance.
  • Minnesota Duluth is on a current nine-game win streak and hold a 5-0 record at home this season.
  • Mandy Pearson has been the UMD women's basketball head coach since 2015.
WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • The Warriors were selected 11th overall and 5th in the NSIC South by coaches around the league.
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coach Hannah McGlone are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes.
  • The Warriors' 7-0 start was the best opening stretch of games since the 2015-16 season, where WSU started 13-0.
