Warrior Weekend : Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team hits the road for a final weekend of away contests before NSIC play begins, traveling to Missouri to take on Truman State University and Maryville University.

WSU will square off with TSU at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17 in Kirksville, Mo. and then will head to St. Louis to face Maryville University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Winona State (0-2, 0-0 NSIC) will look start strong against Truman State (1-1, 0-0 GLVC) as TSU is playing at home for the first time in the 2023-24 campaign. After battling the Bulldogs in Kirksville, WSU will go see about the Saints, who enter the weekend 1-1 overall and will play Concordia University, St. Paul on Friday night. 

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
- Winona State earned Special Mention status by the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls this past August. 
- Winona State battled at NCAA Division I Drake in preseason, leading the Bulldogs 25-16 after the 1st quarter. 
- WSU trailed by just one at halftime vs. Drake (39-38) before falling 94-60 in Des Moines. 
- Olivia Gamoke, a transfer from Sioux Falls, has 30 points on the year so far to lead WSU. 
- Mattie Schimenz has scored 29 total points, and hit from the floor at an impressive 57.1% clip. 
- Schimenz has hit 50.0% (5-of-10) 3-pointers on the year. 
- Last year WSU was 11-17 overall and 5-17 in NSIC play in 2022-23. 
- Winona State was selected 12th in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll.
- Alex Dornfeld was tabbed as the Winona State Player to Watch in the NSIC Poll.
- The 2023-24 WSU roster features three seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshman.
- The addition of former Winona State standout Emily Kieck gives Winona State an all-alumnae coaching staff, with Wurtz, Hannah McClone and Kieck all former WSU players. 
- McGlone heads into her second season as an assistant coach for Wurtz. McGlone also has college experience at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). 
- The 2023-24 campaign is the 50th year of women's basketball at Winona State. 

Truman State STORYLINES
- TSU and WSU have played just once previously, a  55-42 Griffon victory on Dec. 3, 2004, in Warrensburg, Mo.
- The Warriors have faced TSU once before, losing in overtime vs. the Bulldogs in a neutral-site game in Quincy, Ill., 59-56 OT on Nov. 17, 2018.
- WSU hit 10-of-13 foul shots in the 2018 match up between the two schools. 
- The Bulldogs were 20-10 overall and 15-5 in league play last year. 
- TSU played two high-level NCAA Division I programs in exhibition action to start the year, losing 121-60 at University of Illinois and falling 88-68 at Iowa State.
- The Bulldogs are 18-16 in non-conference play since 2019.
- Head coach Theo Dean has been with Bulldog program for over 10 years. 

Maryville University STORYLINES
- Maryville was picked to finish 5th in the 2023-24 Great Lakes Valley Conference Preseason Poll
- Maryville is coming off a 15-13 overall mark last winter. The Saints were 10-10 in league play. 
- The Saints are led by Antoinette Mussorici, shooing 46.7% from the floor, averaging 16.0 points per game. 
- MU's top rebounder is Karlee Feldman, who is averaging 9.0 boards per contest.
- The Saints will face Concordia-St. Paul on Friday before taking on the Warriors on Saturday.
- Head coach Darvin Grover has been with the Storm since 2005. 
 
WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • The Warriors were selected 12th overall in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll. This season marks the first single-division format within NSIC basketball. 
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes.
  • The first Winona State women's basketball season was in 1973-74, with the squad going 9-5 overall.
