Warrior Game Day : Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's basketball team will take on Concordia University, St. Paul on Tuesday, Nov. 21, as the Warriors open the home portion of their 2023-24 NSIC schedule. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.

Winona State (0-4, 0-0 NSIC) will face a CSP (3-1, 0-0 NSIC) team that is off to strong start on the season. The Golden Bears lost to nationally-ranked Missouri Western 84-71, but have defeated Maryville (74-68), Southeastern Oklahoma (67-43) and Truman State (74-72). Tuesday's tilt will be the first time WSU has played on home court since last season when they wrapped up the 2022-23 campaign with a 73-53 win over CSP.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • Winona State earned Special Mention status by the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls this past August. 
  • WSU is 0-4 overall on the season and will open NSIC play on Tuesday. 
  • Winona State was selected 12th in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll.
  • Emma Carpenter leads WSU with a 9.8 per/game scoring average. 
  • Olivia Gamoke and Mattie Schimenz both come in at a 9.3 ppg clip. 
  • Kaitlyn Schimipf is third on the squad in assists with 8, with Gamoke (9) and Schimez (11) in the top two spots. 
  • Alex Dornfeld was tabbed as the Winona State Player to Watch in the NSIC Poll.
  • The 2023-24 WSU roster features three seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshman.
  • The addition of former Winona State standout Emily Kieck gives Winona State an all-alumnae coaching staff, with Wurtz, Hannah McClone and Kieck all former WSU players. 
  • McGlone heads into her second season as an assistant coach for Wurtz. McGlone also has college experience at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). 
  • The 2023-24 campaign is the 50th year of women's basketball at Winona State. 

Concordia, St. Paul STORYLINES
  • Concordia University, St. Paul is 3-1 on the year. 
  • CSP's Ally Gietzel is the led the Golden Bears with 22 points against Maryville University over the weekend. 
  • Kimmons averaged 21.0 points, six rebounds and two assists last week, as the Golden Bears go 2-0.
  • CSP beat Truman State on a buzzer-beater, 74-72 to complete the weekend sweep for the Golden Bears.
  • WSU beat CSP in their last matchup, 73-53 in Winona. 
  • CSP has gone 4-1 vs. the Warriors in the past five meetings. 
  • Head coach Amanda Johnson has been in charge of the Golden Bears since 2016.
 
WARRIOR NOTABLES 
  • The Warriors were selected 12th overall in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll. This season marks the first single-division format within NSIC basketball. 
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes.
  • The first Winona State women's basketball season was in 1973-74, with the squad going 9-5 overall.
