Winona State football adds 33 for 2023 season

WINONA, Minn. - Winona State University head football coach Brian Bergstrom and his coaching staff added 33 student-athletes to the Warrior program, as announced by the team on National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 1.

The 2023 class is Bergstrom's second signing group and represents the first full recruiting cycle for the WSU staff, having taking over the Winona State program last January.

About the class Bergstrom noted, "We are extremely grateful for, excited about and proud of the 2023 Warrior Football Signing Class.  They are the right fit at the right time for our team because of their belief, character, intelligence, and football ability.  Our football family and our culture grew in a very positive way today.  The future is bright at Winona State, we are only just getting started.”

Bergstrom and the Warrior staff will welcome friends, fans and followers of Winona State football to a Signing Day Social, held at River City Grill. The WSU coaching staff will introduce the 2023 signing class at 7 p.m.; the open house format begins at 5 p.m. and is scheduled to end at 8 p.m. River City Grill is located at 1025 US-61, Winona, Minn. 55987.

This past fall, Winona State advanced to the NCAA Division II Football postseason for just the seventh time in program history.  WSU went 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC South, earning a share of the division title.

Jacob Anderson, 6-0, 170 lbs Defensive Back from Maple Grove, Minn.  Served as captain of the Maple Grove football and basketball teams. As a senior, earned First Team All-Conference honors and was named to the 2022 Star Tribune All Metro squad. Also selected for AP All-State accolades.

Darioh Balisidya, 6-0, 175 lb. defensive back from Elk River, Minn.  Earned 2022 All-District honors in football for an ERHS team that went 13-0 and won the MSHSL Class AAAAA State Championship.

Aidan Boehle, 6-5, 210 lb. defensive lineman from Minnetonka, Minn. As a senior, earned All-District honors for MHS and was named to the 2022 MSHSL All-State football team.

Keaton Brown, 6-4, 260 lb. offensive lineman from Woodbury, Minn. Was a 3-year starter on the O-Line for the Royals. WHS went 7-3 overall and advanced to the MSHSL AAAAAA second round, falling to Eden Prairie, 55-14.

Ben Burgess, 6-1, 200 lb. linebacker / punter.  Was a 2nd team All-Conference Outside Linebacker and Honorable Mention All-Conference Punter at Baraboo (Wis.) High School. Served as team captain as a senior, while competing in four different sports at the varsity level for BHS.

Peyton Byrne, 6-3, 275 lb. offensive lineman from Stewartville, Minn. Earned 2nd team All-State honors while competing for nearby Stewartville High School. In 2022, SHS went 10 - 1 overall, won the Section 1AAAA Championship before falling 60-22 to Hutchinson in the Class AAAA quarterfinals.

Sylvere Campbell, 6-2, 215 lb. wide receiver. Transfer from NCAA Division III Carthage College, earned four consecutive Carthage football Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for the Firebirds. Competed for Martin Luther H.S. in Milwaukee, Wis. as a prep player.

Bryan Cassellius, 6-0, 180 lb. linebacker from Winona, Minn. In 2022, earned All-District and District Defensive Player of the Year honors, as well as 2022 District Co-Special Teams Player of the Year for the 7-3 Winhawks.

Jimmy Curtin, 6-0 190 lb wide receiver from Lincoln-Way (Ill.) High School. As a senior, earned All Area and All Conference and was named the LWHS Offensive MVP. Helped lead team to a Illinois High School Association (IHSA) 2022 runner-up finish.

Ethan Doucette, 6-1, 225 lb. linebacker from Kimberly, Wis. Earned First Team All Conference honors while being named the league Linebacker-of-the-Year as a senior. Was tabbed KHS Co-Defensive Player of the Year en route to WIAA All State honors.

Jackson Flottmeyer, 6-5, 225 lb. quarterback from La Crosse, Wis. Was a two-time WIAA State Champion at Aquinas High School, earning All State honors. Named the La Crosse Tribune Player-of-the-Year on two occasions.

Brady Foster, 6-2, 185 lb. defensive back from Waukesha, Wis. Was a First Team All-Region selection as a senior, earning All-Conference accolades as both a wide receiver and defensive back. Also ran track at Waukesha West, qualifying for the WIAA state meet on two occasions.

Sidney Green, 5-10, 181 lb. defensive back from Brother Rice (Ill.) High School. Green competed for the 2022 Brother Rice squad that finished 7-5 overall and advanced to the second round of the IHSAA playoffs.

Javontae Gregory, 6-0, 180 lb. defensive back from Esko, Minn. Was twice named All-Area while competing for the 11-1 Esko Eskomos, a team which advanced to the third round of the MSHSL playoffs.

Brecken Klein, 6-3, 308 lb. offensive lineman from Lakeville, Minn. Played for two-time MSHSL state champion Lakeville South. Also served as captain of the Cougar Olympic weightlifting team and was a Minnesota Vikings Prep Elite participant.

John Klinger, 6-3 250 lb. defensive lineman from Oshkosh, Wis. Was twice named a First Team All-Conference defensive lineman for Oshkosh North High School. Also competed in track and was a WIAA state qualifier in the shot put.

Mason Kolling, 6-4, 225 lb. tight end from Kingsland, Minn. Served as three-time team captain for KHS, earning All District honors. Was a two-time Most Valuable Lineman for the Knights.

Cole Lipper, 6-3, 225 lb. tight end from Mediapolis, Iowa.  Served as team captain at MHS, while also being named to All-District First Team three times.  Earned All District MVP honors and was twice selected to the  All Hawkeye First Team.

Reese Littlefield, 6-2, 235 lb. linebacker from Centennial (Minn.) High School. Was named to the 2022 StarTribune All-State team and selected to participate in the MSHSL All-Star game. Also tabbed to the Minnesota Vikings All-State team, the Kare 11 All-Metro team, and Star Trib All-Metro team. Twice named All-District while at CHS.

Eli Moses, 6-3 230 lb. defensive lineman from Waukee Northwest (Iowa) High School. Was a two-time First Team All District selection and three-time varsity letter winner at WNHS.

Blake Schraufnagel, 6-0, 195 lb. athlete from Mayville, Wis. Earned All-Conference honors as both a running back and defensive back at MHS. Received Honorable Mention All State accolades and named the 2022 WFCA Small School Offensive Player of the Year as well as the 2022 WI AP Player of the Year

Kaleb Skelly, 6-4, 205 lb. wide receiver transfer from Northern State University. In high school, was named both All State, North Suburban Conference MVP while winning three MSHSL section championships at Spring Lake Park High School.

Carter Todd,   6-4, 190 lb. wide receiver from La Crescent, Minn. Named Offensive Player of the Year in the Red District of the Southeast Conference Red District as well as First Team All-District, and First Team All-Section. Also named finalist for the Larry Fitzgerald Wide Receiver of the Year while competing at LHS.

James Williams, 5-10, 181 lb defensive back transfer from Minnesota State, Mankato.  In 2019, Williams was a member of the Maverick 2019 national runner-up squad. Attended Cretin-Durham Hall high school in St. Paul, Minn.
