Winona State claims titles, sets records at NSIC Indoor Championships

MANKATO, Minn. - The Winona State University track and field team earned both individual and relay team titles at the 2023 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Indoor Track & Field Championships in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26.

Competing in Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State, Winona State was led by Shereen Vallabouy in the 400 meters, setting an NSIC Championships record with a time of 53.28. Vallabouy was joined by Warrior teammates Lindsay Cunningham and Kaylee Beyer in winning NSIC championships, with Cunningham cruising to a time of 15:48.66 in the 5000 meters and Beyer posting a race-winning time of 2:12.22 in the 800-meter finals. 

Beyer, Cunningham, and Vallabouy all established Myers Field House facility records with their performances, and Vallabouy's 400-meter time beat her own NSIC record of 54.79 to set a new league mark. Cunningham beat runner-up Amanda Montplaisir of Minnesota State by over 70 seconds, while Beyer bested her own WSU record of 2:12.75 as well, setting a new all-time Warrior mark in the 800 meters. 

In addition, the Winona State 4X400 relay team of Vallabouy, Lainey Lipschultz, Alyssa Larson and Brooklyn Schyvinck turned in the top time in their event, winning with a mark of 3:49.17.  

WSU had several top-5 performances over the two-day meet, including Brooklyn Schyvinck's third place in the 400 meters with a time of 56.21 and Beyer's runner-up time in the mile run at 4:46.93. The Winona State Distance Medley Relay team took fourth with a time of 12:03.43; Xana Leum was the highest-finishing WSU field athlete, finishing fourth in the triple jump with an 11.96m (39-03.00) effort. McKenna Taylor finished fifth in the 3000 meters with a time of 10:09.19.

As a team, Winona State earned 74 points, good for third place. Minnesota State won the meet with 216.5 points, while Augustana was second with 95. 

Next up for Winona State and head coach Mason Rebarchek is the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, held in Virginia Beach, Va. on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11.
