NSIC Tournament : Baseball Gameday

MANDAN, Minn. - The Winona State University baseball team opens play in the 2023 NSIC Baseball Tournament today, May 10, taking on Minnesota State in a 6 p.m. game. 

Winona State (22-27, 18-16 NSIC) enters the NSIC postseason as the No. 7 seed and will take on the second-seeded Mavericks (35-13, 25-8 NSIC) in the opening game for both teams.

Winona State Storylines
The Warriors are 22-27, 18-16 NSIC overall and 18-16  in the NSIC.
Derek Baumgartner leads WSU at the plate, hitting .399 on the year with 61 hits and 21 doubles.
Cooper Kapanke has six home runs this season and 40 RBI to lead the Warriors. Kapanke leads the team in runs scored with 35.
Austin Beyer & Nick Herbst are both 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts, tied for the team lead. 
Justin Firpo has three wins, 10 appearances and 52 innings pitched on the season. 
Davis Zeutzius leads the Warriors with five saves and a 2.70 ERA.
Drew Lingen is the reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Week, having thrown a 2-0 shutout win vs. USF

Minnesota State Storylines
The Mavericks are the second seed in the tournament. 
Minnesota State is 35-13 overall and 25-8 in the NSIC.
Aidan Byrne leads MSU with a .353 batting average. 
Byrne has 61 hits in 173 at-bats for the Mavericks.
Jackson Hauge leads MSU with nine homers on the year. 
Dylan Gotto holds a 8-2 record on the mound for the Mavericks.
Nathan Culley has racked up 83 K's for MSU on the hill so far this year. 

WARRIOR NOTABLES
Head coach Seth Wing is in his first season at Winona State, having previously served as athletic director and baseball coach at Cornell College. 
Wing was an associate head coach during WSU's last World Series appearance in 2011. 
Winona State first fielded an intercollegiate baseball team in 1919.
