Warrior Game Day : Women's Basketball

St. PAUL, Minn. -  The Winona State University women's basketball team will travel to Concordia University, St. Paul on Tuesday, January 30 for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) mid-week contest between the Warriors and Golden Bears. The WSU - CSP showdown will start at 5:30 p.m. in the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul. 

Winona State (5-14, 4-10 NSIC) is coming off a two-game home stand and Tuesday's tilt will be the first of three consecutive away contests. WSU is looking to end a four-game skid and emulate the WSU win over CSP last season when Winona State beat the Golden Bears by 20 points in a 73-53 Warrior win. 
 
Alex Dornfeld has delivered a series of solid performances for Winona State recently, registering a double-double against St. Cloud State on Saturday, racking up 14 points and 14 rebounds versus the Huskies. Dornfeld has hit double digits in rebounds in three of the last five Warrior games, while Olivia Gamoke has hit double digits in scoring in two of the most recent three WSU contests.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES   

  • WSU is 5-14 on the year, 4-10 in NSIC play.   
  • Winona State is looking to end a 4-game losing skid.
  • WSU fell to SCSU 55-41 on Saturday. 
  • WSU is shooting 37.6% as a team from the floor.
  • The Warriors are averaging 55.4 points/game and conceding 64.3 points per outing.  
  • Leading the Warriors on the season is Olivia Gamoke with 9.2 points per game. 
  • Alex Dornfeld leads the team in rebounds with 7.5 per game. 
  • Dornfeld earned her fourth double-double of the season against St. Cloud State on Saturday with a 14-point, 14-rebound performance. 
  • Hailey Markworth scored 11 points off the bench against the Huskies.

Concordia University, St. Paul STORYLINES

  • The Golden Bears are 14-5 overall and 10-4 in the NSIC. 
  • CSP swept their most recent NSIC weekend, defeating Bemidji State 74-30 and Minnesota Crookston 82-65.
  • Concordia, St. Paul has a 33-17 record against Winona State, dating back to Dec. 11, 1999.
  • Concordia, St. Paul barely beat WSU in their last meeting, with CSP just edging WSU 53-52. 
  • As a team, CSP is shooting 41.7% from the floor and 68.8% at the line.   
  • CSP hits 30.3% of their three-point attempts.  
  • Ally Gietzel is averaging 17.2 points per game for CSP
  • Amanda Johnson is in her ninth year as head coach for the Golden Bears.

Warrior Notables:

  • The Warriors were selected 12th overall in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll. This season marks the first single-division format within NSIC basketball.  
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes. 
  • The first Winona State women's basketball season was in 1973-74, with the squad going 9-5 overall.
