WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University women's volleyball team faced off against #11 Concordia-St. Paul, dropping a five-set match against the Golden Bears. Tonight's match against CSP was WSU's sixth match against nationally ranked opponents, holding a 3-3 record against such teams.
Stat Leaders:
Set one:
Set one would be a closely contested match the whole way, with the Warriors taking an early three-point lead at 7-4. The Golden Bears would tie the match up quickly with a kill from Sophia Andersen at 8-8. Battling back and forth the rest of the set no team would see a lead of more than two points.
Sidney Paulson earned the final two points of the set, with the Warriors winning 26-24.
Set two and three:
After Winona State took set one, set two began another close set with the Warriors tying the score at 18-18 with a block from
Abigail Savatski. The Golden Bears would then go on a 5-0 run highlighted by a kill from Sophia Andersen. With WSU trying to come back, CSP would take set two 25-21. Set three would see Concordia-St. Paul take an early lead and never look back, taking set three as well 25-16.
Set four:
The Warriors would not back down in set four, taking a commanding 6-1 lead highlighted by kills from
Sidney Paulson and
Lydia Lange. WSU would have control of the set until CSP would take their first lead at 18-17 with a service ace from Emma Schmidt. Ending a close set would be none other than
Sidney Paulson at 25-23.
Set five:
The final set of this match would see an early Golden Bear lead, causing head coach
Joe Getzin to use two timeouts early. The timeouts would not be enough to gather the Warriors together, with Concordia-St. Paul taking set five and the match 15-8.
