Warrior Game Day : Women's Basketball

WINONA, Minn. -  The Winona State University women's basketball team will travel to the University of Sioux Falls on Friday, February 2, and Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, February 3. The Warrior-Cougar showdown will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and the WSU – SMSU match up will see a 3:30 p.m. tip on Saturday.   
  
Winona State dropped their contest against Sioux Falls earlier this year 49-53 and will be looking to even the record in Sioux Falls this weekend. The Warriors hold a 10-12 record vs. the Cougars dating back to Jan. 5 2013. WSU holds a 2-9 record on the road vs. USF.  Winona State defeated Southwest Minnesota State earlier this year 76-61 at home and will look sweep the season against them. The Warriors hold a 21-5 record vs the Mustangs dating back to Jan. 8,  2010.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES    

  • WSU is 5-15 on the year, 4-11 in NSIC play.    

  • WSU is shooting 37.6% as a team from the floor.
  • The Warriors are averaging 55.4 points/game and conceding 64.3 points per outing.
  • Olivia Gamoke is WSU's leading scorer, averaging 9.2 ppg.
  • Alex Dornfeld is the top Warrior rebounder, averaging 7.5 rebounds/game
  • Dornfeld most recently recorded a 14-rebound game against St. Cloud State.
  • Olivia Gamoke leads WSU in minutes per game (30.5).
  • Gamoke and Carpenter both have hit triple digits in scoring at 174 and 151 points, respectively.

Sioux Falls STORYLINES 

  • The Cougars enter the weekend at 7-11 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC.  

  • Sioux Falls enters the weekend on a two-game losing streak. 

  • Winona State holds an 8-11 record vs. USF dating back to January 5, 2013.   

  • WSU lost to USF earlier this year 53-49, on December 2. 

  • USF last won on January 19, beating Minnesota Crookston 56-49

  • Travis Traphagen is in his 16th season as head coach for the Cougars.  
     

Southwest Minnesota State STORYLINES   

  •  SMSU and WSU will meet for the 91st time with the Mustangs leading 47-43
  • The Mustang - Warrior series that began in 1973-74.
  • Winona State defeated SMSU earlier season in Winona 76-61
  • WSU has defeated the Mustangs in two of the four previous meetings.
  • The Mustangs are 30-14 all-time in games played in Marshall and last suffered a loss to WSU in the R/A Facility on Jan. 24, 2020.
  • SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 3-10 all-time versus WSU.
  • Head Coach Tom Webb is in his eighth year at SMSU.   

Warrior Notables:

  • The Warriors were selected 12th overall in the 2023-24 NSIC Coaches Poll. This season marks the first single-division format within NSIC basketball.  
  • Head coach Ana Wurtz and assistant coaches Hannah McGlone and Emily Kieck are the only all-female coaching staff in the NSIC that also competed at their alma mater as student-athletes. 
  • The first Winona State women's basketball season was in 1973-74, with the squad going 9-5 overall.
