Box Score 4 DETROIT, Mich. – Winona State volleyball opened their season with a 2-2 record at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.
The Warriors earned wins over Northwood and Upper Iowa, and suffered losses to Cedarville and Wayne State. Head Coach
Kristine Pelky picked up her first career victory in the season opener against Northwood.
Winona State (3) – Northwood (0)
Winona State started the season on a high note, sweeping Northwood by scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-22. The Warriors hit .228 on the match and held NU to just .115 hitting.
Kenna Kornely recorded 13 kills while
Gianna Vollrath notched 12.
Abigail Savatski tallied six total blocks and
Anna Hennessy picked up 17 digs to lead the WSU defense.
Cedarville (3) – Winona State (1)
In the first day's final match, the Warriors suffered their first loss of the season 3-1. WSU tried to rally back from being down two sets and won the third 25-21, but Cedarville took control and clinched the victory with a 25-17 fourth set win. Kornely led WSU with 15 kills, while
Jaci Winchell and
Ashlyn Steding each dished out 16 assists in Winona State's two-setter rotation.
Winona State (3) – Upper Iowa (1)
The Warriors rallied back after losing the first set 26-24 and won the next three sets to secure the 3-1 victory over Upper Iowa. The Warriors hit above .250 in each of the final three sets and held the Peacock offense to .164 hitting for the match. Kornely notched a career-high 27 kills and Steding tallied a career-high 38 assists in the victory.
Wayne (3) – Winona State (2)
Winona State lost a close first set, 25-23, bounced back to win the next two sets, but ultimately lost in a five-set match that came down to the wire. Winona State was unable to close out the final set of the match against the host school. Kornely closed out a fantastic weekend with 19 kills. Vollrath and
Abby Ongna also recorded double-digit kills for the WSU attack.
Ellie Bruns tallied three key aces for the Warriors at the service line.
Kornely and Ongna were named to the Warrior Invitational All-Tournament Team after a solid start to the season for the Warriors.
Winona State looks to continue early-season success as they head to Kenosha, Wis. next weekend to compete in four nonconference matches.
