Box Score WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team lost in double overtime to the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears.
Winona State women's basketball team would fall short to the CSP Golden Bears in a double overtime thriller after a pair of free throws from Concordia-St. Paul to seal the deal.
How it Happened:
To start the game, both teams would battle back and forth with seven total lead changes coming in the first quarter alone. With this competitiveness, both WSU and CSP would shoot below their season average with 4-11 (36.4%) and 6-18 (33.3), respectively. As the Warriors have done all season, they would control the charity stripe making six compared to the Golden Bears one making the score 17-16 in favor of CSP going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Concordia-St. Paul would have the slight upper hand. After a few consecutive possessions with a bucket, the Golden Bears would take a 30-25 lead at the 2:55 minute mark. After a pair of free throws from
Hailey Markworth, Winona State would inch closer to a tie game. But with a couple aggressive field goals from CSP, the score going into halftime would be 34-32, Concordia-St. Paul.
To start the second half the Golden Bears would go on an 8-2 run to give them a 42-33-point lead with 6:52 remaining in the quarter. Under their largest deficit of the night, Winona State found their spark scoring seven straight points later in the quarter and tying the game at 45 apiece. To end the quarter, WSU was backed by a trio of
Vivica Bretton free throws and took a 53-50 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Warriors would find the first couple jumpers to make the score 58-50 with 8:53 on the clock. With both teams struggling offensively in the game, the game would be won with stellar defense and from the charity stripe. Both teams were able to capitalize in clutch situations, but the Warriors would hold onto a 66-63-point lead with 50 seconds remaining. However, with eight seconds remaining, the Golden Bears would hit a dagger three-point jump shot to send the match to overtime at 69-69.
In overtime, straight off the rip, CSP would hit a three-pointer followed immediately by a pair of free throws from Winona State. With only five points scored from both teams and all of Winona States coming from the free throw line, we would see a couple of failed buzzer beater attempts from both teams and head into double overtime with a 74-74 score.
In double OT, Winona State would catch the hot hand by scoring the first three field goals and taking a 80-75-point lead at the 3:59 mark. With what seemed to be the Golden Bears final push, scoring seven straight points and taking a 83-80-point lead, the Warriors would hit a clutch three pointer with under one minute to go to tie the game at 83. Both teams would hit back to back buckets on their respective possessions making the score 85-85 with 23 seconds remaining. Bu the game would ultimately finish at the charity stripe and missed buzzer beater by Winona State, with a final score of 87-85.
