WINONA, Minn – The Winona State football team looks to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss to NCAA DI St. Thomas as they travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to face Northern State University on Thursday, September 3rd at 6:00 p.m.
Winona State lost its season opener 15-9 against St. Thomas while Northern State handled Chadron State 42-17. Northern State took the matchup's last contest, defeating WSU 30-24 on September 28, 2024. This will be the first NSIC action for both teams this season.
Winona State Notes:
- The Warriors lost a heartbreaker at St. Thomas last week. WSU tied it up with less than four minutes to go, but gave up a touchdown in the final minute to suffer the defeat.
- Sophomore running back Jahmani Muhammad led the rushing attack with 75 yards and a score.
- Jackson Flottmeyer went 13-25 with 116 yards through the air and added 42 yards rushing.
- Tight end James Durst gathered five receptions for 54 yards.
- Evan Swanstrom scored the first Warrior points of the season, nailing a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter of last week's game.
- Linebacker tandem of Ethan Doucette and Brent Jeske each gathered eight tackles. Jeske also picked up a sack.
Northern State Notes:
- Northern State dominated (RV) Chadron State in the season opener, cruising to a 42-17 victory.
- Running back Hank Kraft was named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 232 yards and scoring four touchdowns last week.
- Splitting time behind center, Ty Englehart and Joey Dube-Garrett combined for 15-25 passing and 210 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
- Jake Adams led the defensive side of the ball with 8.0 total tackles.
- This will be NSU's second consecutive home game to start the year.
After Northern State, the Warriors will be at home hosting the University of Jamestown on Saturday, September 12th at 1:00 p.m. on Family Weekend.
