Warrior women's basketball travels to Wayne State

WSU takes on the Wildcats in pair of contests

Winona, Minn. -- The Winona State University women's basketball team heads to Nebraska where they will face Wayne State College in a two-game series on Friday and Saturday, January 29-30.  Friday's game will tipoff at 6:30pm, while Saturday's contest will start at 2:30pm

The Warriors (0-4 overall / 0-3 NSIC) will be looking to build on their best team outing of the season in their most recent game, a 81-79 overtime loss to Augustana on Friday, January 22.   Winona State took the game to OT with a balanced effort from several Warriors, while the rematch scheduled for Saturday was cancelled.

For Wayne State (4-4 overall / 3-3 NSIC), the games this weekend will be their first home action since January 9.    The Wildcats have won three of their last four games, including a sweep of Upper Iowa last weekend.  WSC dispatched UIU 84-79 and 78-70 in the Friday-Saturday January 22-23 series. 

Winona State head coach Scott Ballard and the Warriors were led by Sydney Lodermeier in their OT loss, with the junior from Goodhue, Minn.  going 4-for-5 from behind the arc and scoring 16 points on the day.  Emma Fee grabbed ten rebounds, while Emily Kieck scored 12 points and collected four assists.   Caitlyn Riley also hit double-digits in points with ten and almost achieved the double-double at nine boards. Jenna Bruss had a perfect day at the free throw line, going 6-for-6.

Doubled Up… With no COVID cancelations on their schedule, Wayne State has played all eight games on their schedule so far this year, while Winona State has had four games canceled.
 
Wildcat Eight-Six … The WSC high-water mark in terms of points scored this season is 86 - achieved in a win over Concordia-St. Paul on January 9. 

Keep an Eye on It... Wayne State racked up 18 steals against MSU-Mankato earlier this season. 

It's a team thing… WSC is averaging 74.6 points per game, the third-best mark in the NSIC currently, while Winona State is scoring 63.5 each outing. 

Five Alive... At 17.0 points per game, WSC's Erin Norling is fifth in the league in scoring. In eight games so far, Norling has scored 18 three-pointers as well.  She is the current NSIC Player-of-the-Week in the South division. 

Having a Good Handle is Helpful…The Warriors' Emily Kieck is second in the NSIC in terms of assist/turnover ratio at 2.0 a game,. Ranking fourth in assists per game with 4.0 per game, Kieck is running the show for WSU. 

To Close to Call...The two programs are similar in terms of success on the offensive boards.  The Warriors average 10.5 rebounds a game, while the Wildcats grab 10.3.

Fee Finds Forty-Three… Emma Fee has scored 43 points over the course of four contests this season; 30 of those came in a strong outing against the University of Sioux Falls on Jan. 17. 
  
We used to be Neighbors… Winona State's Scott Ballard first faced Brent Pollari when he was the head coach at Saint Mary's (Minn.) University in Winona.  Pollari coached the Cardinals for three seasons, racking up a 50-29 record and led his teams to the MIAC post-season on two occasions.
