MANKATO, Minn. - The Winona State University competed at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. in a pair of final tune-up meets ahead of the 2023 NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Warriors - currently ranked No. 11 among NCAA Division II track and field programs - took part in two events; the Maverick Open #1 on Wednesday, May 2 and Maverick Open #2 on Saturday, May 6, as the team looks to peak at the optimum point in the season.
Maverick Open #1
At the Maverick Open #1 on Wednesday, May 2, WSU was paced by a championship performance in the women's 5000-meter run and registered several strong Warrior efforts.
Mara Talabac won the women's 5000-meter run, completing the race in 19:11.65, far ahead of second place Evelyn Villalobos of Gustavus Adolphus who ran a 19:27.15. In the 800-meter run, WSU's
Bellamy Sukalski ran a 2:23.23, good for a fifth place finish, while
Andrea Fromelt turned in a time of 5:02.05 in the 1500-meter run, capturing eighth place overall.
The women's 200-meter race saw Winona State standout
Brooklyn Schyvinck run a time of 24.48, just .07 off the top time of 24.41 ran by Ja'Cey Simmons of the host Mavericks. The 400-meter race saw Schyvinck earn a second runner-up spot, running a 55.65 in the event. Also in the sprints,
Kaylee Olson ran the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.82, good for 13th overall.
Winona State had two competitors in the women's 100-meter hurdles, with
Xana Leum finishing fourth (14.73) and Warrior teammate
Hanna Reichenberger (14.98) fifth. In the 400-meter hurdles, WSU's
Regan Feit earned a top-10 finish, coming in sixth with a time of 1:04.41.
In the field events,
Ashlie Lockington took fifth overall, registering a mark of 5.56 meters (18-03.00). Makayla Jackson of host Minnesota State won the event with a 6.35m (20-10.00) effort.
Maverick Open #2
In the Maverick Open #2 on Saturday, May 6, Winona State saw
Alyssa Larson claim top honors in the women's 400-meter dash, winning the event with a time 57.31, beating Marianna Guerra-Reese of St. Cloud State who was second at 58.79.
Winona State also claimed the top five spots in the women's 1500 meter run.
Sophia Taarud won the race with a time of 4:37.95. Warrior teammate
Mara Talabac took second with a time of 4:52.35, and Allison Kenefick (4:54.05),
Kylie Anderson (4:57.70) and
Rachel Hoffman (4:48.34) swept the next three places.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles,
Lainey Lipschultz earned a runner-up finish with a time of 1:05.09, just between SCSU's Brooklyn Brouse who won the event with a time of 1:04.55.
Bellamy Sukalski ran a time of 2:22.61, third overall, in the women's 800-meter run.
In the Winona State field event competitions,
Mari Mohling claimed a seventh-place finish in the women's high jump with a 1.55-meter (5-01.00) effort.
Daria Tersina was 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.03-meters (16-06.00).
Kaylee Patnode was the top Warrior field event participant, claiming third place overall in the women's javelin throw, with a best toss of 39.26 meters (128-10)
Next up for the Winona State University women's track and field team will be the 2023 NSIC Outdoor Championships, held on May 11-13 in St. Paul, Minn. The Warriors will join the best of the NSIC in Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia St. Paul for the three-day event.
