Bunke was a standout track and field athlete, becoming Winona State’s first track and field All-American who qualified for the national championships four times in three years. He competed in long jump, triple jump, and sprints, and is the reigning WSU record holder in long jump and triple jump. He set long jump records at several meets. Bunke was a four-time NAIA National qualifier in long jump, placing seventh in 1971; an NAIA Outdoor qualifier placing fifth in 1972; took second in NAIA Outdoor in 1973; and placed fifth in NAIA Indoor in 1973. Bunke was the Winona State track athlete to make Indoor All-American in 1973, was the first WSU athlete to place at Nationals, and took home the 1972 NIC double championship in the long jump and triple jump. He was also nominated for Outstanding College Athletes of America in 1972. A Psychology major with an MBA, Bunke retired in 2011 and resides in Rushford., Minn., with his wife, Patty Ann.
