Robert J. Scott's collegiate athletic career involved running at Winona State and he has been running ever since.
Scott's involvement in track and cross country continued after Winona State and led to one of the most successful track and cross country careers in northeast Iowa.
While at Winona State, Scott was a member of its track team and became a charter member of the men's cross country team. That would be an indication of things to come as Scott would become the first head coach of the boys' and girls' cross country program and girls' basketball program at North Fayette High School in West Union, IA. Over thirty years later and after retiring as a mathematics teacher, Scott remains the head coach of the boys' and girls' cross country teams and the boys' track team.
Scott has earned Iowa girls' cross country Coach of the Year honors while guiding teams to one state title and five runner-up finishes. His boys' track teams have won 14 conference titles.
In 2007 Scott concluded 43 years as a head boys' track and field coach at 4 different high schools with the last 39 at North Fayette in West Union Iowa. His last 4 years led to state level success that he had not had before in track. In 2004 his team was class 2A state runner-up champion one individual champion and a state record 4x200 relay champion. In 2005, the team placed third with one individual state champion. In 2006, the team was class 2A state champion with no individual or relay titles. A true team effort. In 2007, his team again was the state runner-up champion with one individual title. The last 13 years of his tenure his team was the Upper Iowa Conference champion, a feat that had not been done before or since by any sport in the conference.
2007 marked the end of Scott's head coaching duties for the boys and girls cross country programs which he initiated in 1968. He continues to volunteer coach with both the programs.
Honors that have come Scott's way since being inducted in the the WSU Hall of Fame are:
Honorary HS School Referee at the Drake Relays
2006 Inducted into Iowa Track Coaches Hall of Fame
2A State Track Coach of the Year
2006 West Union Citizen of the Year
2009 new track facility was named in his honor "Bob Scott Track"
Scott has had a long run of life with 30 years of service in the Lions Club at West Union, IA along with service to the American Legion, Jaycees, his church and, with his wife and five children, a contribution to making the world a better place to live by giving a "last chance" to eight foster children.
