Her goal was to graduate and along the road to graduate, Stephanie J. (Rieder) Bitter had plenty of activity to keep her focused.

Bitter was a two sport athlete at WSU who found plenty of success on both the Volleyball and Tennis courts.

During her athletic career, Bitter showed her determination by earning Volleyball All-District 13 honors twice, All Conference honors three times and Tennis All-Conference honors twice.

Bitter’s volleyball play put her in the top ten for a number of statistical categories, earning her team most valuable player honors three times.

Around the tennis net, Bitter also found success. Twice Bitter captured No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles Conference Championships.

In 1994, Bitter’s collegiate tennis career reached a peak as she helped lead the Warriors to a conference championship, a District 13 Championship and berths in singles and doubles and team play at the NAIA National Championships.

Off the courts, Bitter’s academic drive earned her scholar All-American honors as both a volleyball and tennis player.

Bitter graduated, began a nursing career and built a family in Dubuque, IA. Still her love for volleyball and tennis continued to burn.

Over the years, Bitter has been a volleyball associate volunteer coach, a Dubuque soccer club manager, and youth tennis instructor.

Bitter and her husband Tom have three children: Allison, Tommy, and Holly.
